SISLIOBA GENEVA CASTLE

The two villages of Igneada on the Bulgarian border are Begendik and Sislioba. Although Begendik Village is bordered by the sea, Sislioba Village is located about 10 km inland from the coast, in a narrow valley surrounded by forests.

Sislioba Village, where you hear no other sounds than the sounds of leaves swaying in the wind, dozens of bird sounds and insects, fascinates people with its extraordinary geography reminiscent of fairy tales. There are approximately 30-40 households in the village, which is one of the locations preferred by trekking lovers.

Among the places visited by those who came to the village, the Genoese built for the protection of maritime trade.  There is a historic Genoese Castle. Since the village is already built in a hollow valley, it takes a lot of effort to reach the high castle by passing through the forest roads. The castle ruin, which is 4 km away from the village, is destroyed due to human and natural conditions, as it is not protected. However, in its current form, it is one of the castles that can reach today with the most architectural form and form in the region. Some of the northeastern walls of the castle, a part of the bastion in the southeast, and a part of the wall in the east are still standing. On the facades of the rubble infill walls, properly chipped local stone and white lime mortar were used as building materials. Some traces of walls can be seen in the interior of the castle. It is a Roman Period garrison and was also used in the Byzantine Period.

Like every historical artifact, the Genoese Castle was also destroyed by treasure hunters.
